Eastern Black Redstart...

Help. Why is the Holy Island bird 'phoenicuroides' and not 'semirufus' ?

I'm trying to sort out the diff....

EDIT - Just checked Svensson ( I forgot about him) and find that he mentions the greyer upperparts of phoenicuroides rather than the blackish of semirufus. Also cheers to M for his comment below.

I like to get these things clear in my head....

From BWP Concise, on semirufus the black goes a bit further down the breast (about half-way down, rather than a third on phoenicurioides or a quarter on Common Redstart), and the upperparts are blacker (less grey)

This might help too; it's in German, but the pics are good (particularly pp. 13, 17):

Stewart,
Was that your report on the Starling murmuration at Gretna on the N&T B C site a week or so ago. If so, can'y find your e mail but could you give brief details where to view from. Going on Sunday. Thanks in anticipation.
